THE GESTALT CENTER has been training therapists in the Gestalt method of psychotherapy for over 40 years. Our programs are described below.

If you want to gain a better understanding of gestalt therapy, we invite you to attend our Introduction to Gestalt workshop, where you'll see a live demonstration of Gestalt therapy, learn about Gestalt theory, meet some of our faculty and students, and hear more details about our training programs.

We offer a four-year training program leading to a New York State license in gestalt psychoanalysis. This program is open to any candidate with a masters degree or higher in any field recognized by NY State. Candidates with foreign masters degrees will be required to have those degrees evaluated by New York State as being equivalent to a masters degree.

For information about this program click here to see our LP course catalog, or contact us at or at (212) 387-9429.  You may also download our LP Program Application.

We offer a three-year, part-time, Certificate training program in Gestalt psychotherapy for licensed professionals, meeting on 18 alternate Friday evenings from October through May, and including several Sunday/Saturday Seminars, a Winter Therapy Weekend Intensive and a four-day Summer Training Intensive.

Continuing Education Hours are available for LMSW's, LCSW's , Licensed Psychoanalysts and Mental Health Counselors enrolled in this program.  Students receive 41 continuing ed hours for the first year of training, 39 hours for the second year, and 44 hours for the third year.*

GESTALT TRAINING, like our therapy, is both humanistic and experiential, combining a stimulating academic program with a strong emphasis on learning by doing.  At the heart of our program is the use of small practicum groups in which students get to experience and practice live therapy, in the presence of a supportive supervisor.

Students also get to observe live demonstrations by faculty therapists. We are supportive of students' individual needs and students are assigned a advisers who follow them throughout the entire program.

  • Small practicum groups
  • Expert supervision
  • Each student has a faculty advisor
  • Strong sense of community

Our post-graduate training program in Gestalt psychotherapy is open to Social Workers, Psychologists, Counselors, Psychoanalysts, Physicians, Nurses, Educators and other qualified health and healing professionals.

Admission is open to all qualified candidates regardless of race, religion, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity. We particularly encourage and support ethnic, racial and life-style diversity in our faculty and our students.

Our classes are small, which provides an intimate setting for intense learning and personal growth. Since we do limit each class to 12 students we encourage you to apply early to reserve your spot in the next class.

Everyone who completes our Certificate training program will receive a Certificate of Completion.

The annual cost of our training program is listed below.  Besides tuition, there are fees for supervision, room and board for our intensive weekend trainings, and personal therapy, which is required of all students.

** Fees for personal therapy are set by the individual therapists, many of whom give discounts to students. A typical fee would be $100 per session.  Some therapists charge more; some less.

Monthly payment plans are available.

Applications may be submitted throughout the year and will be processed and acted upon within a month of their submission. Candidates may enter in September or February and are encouraged to do an Intensive Weekend prior to beginning the program. An interview is also required.
