WELCOME TO THE GESTALT CENTER FOR PSYCHOTHERAPY AND TRAINING, located in the historic Flatiron District of New York City. We offer post-graduate training, extensive workshops and weekend intensives for mental health professionals, as well as  therapy referrals to Gestalt therapists.

WHAT IS GESTALT THERAPY?

Gestalt therapy is an holistic therapy that focuses on the total person, recognizing the unity of the mind, body, and emotions.  In the 1940's, Frederick (Fritz) Perls, a trained psychoanalyst, developed the Gestalt theory and method in response to his dissatisfaction with the analytic, mind-focused therapy of the first half of the twentieth Century.  Gestalt therapy integrates Gestalt and humanistic psychology, existentialism, and Eastern teachings.

Gestalt is a creative, gentle and patient therapy which focuses on awareness in the present moment.  Through skillful use of a variety of experiential methods, our therapy helps us to free energy locked into old, dysfunctional behavior patterns so that we can undo them and reorganize ourselves in a way that allows us to live more fully and effectively, centered in ourselves, yet able to reach out and take in what the world has to offer.

OUR MISSION

  • Educate and train qualified students in the Gestalt theory and method of psychotherapy, based on the pioneering work of Frederick Perls, M.D. and Laura Perls, Ph.D.  The contemporary gestalt psychoanalysis that we teach is also based on others who trained with them, expanded upon their teachings and revised their methods, including Marilyn Rosanes-Berrett, Ph.D., the founder of our institute.
  • Provide training that reflects our Gestalt philosophy and method in that it be holistic, humanistic, experiential and transformative, and that it encourage and support ethnic, racial and life-style diversity.
  • Provide referrals to gestalt psychotherapists in the metropolitan New York City area.
  • Provide low-fee therapy, through our treatment center, to members of the New York City community who could not otherwise afford treatment.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of Gestalt theory and practice by interacting with the global Gestalt community.

  • Create an authentic, supportive, and socially aware community among faculty, students and alumni of our center.
