Psychoanalytic Licensure
More than a path to licensure.
A foundation for your life’s work.
The four-year Licensed Psychoanalytic (LP) Training Program offers master’s-level students from various backgrounds a path toward New York State licensure as a Gestalt-oriented Psychoanalyst. You’ll learn Gestalt and psychoanalytic theory and practice through clinical experience, live practicum, close supervision, personal therapy, and immersive training. Become a competent, confident therapist and build a meaningful career helping others thrive.

Who It’s For
Our licensure program might be for you if:
You have a master’s degree and are considering a career in psychotherapy
Your graduate degree is outside the mental health field — you’re looking for a path into the profession
You’re looking for a rigorous clinical education grounded in real practice, not theory alone
You’re drawn to Gestalt Therapy’s humanistic, relational, and experiential approach
You want a learning community where personal development is considered part of becoming a therapist
*You don’t need a clinical master’s degree to enter the licensure program but you must hold a master’s degree or higher in a field recognized by New York State. Candidates with foreign master’s degrees must have their degree evaluated by New York State for equivalency.
“Basically a masters and post-grad training in one. Grad-school level curriculum and clinical training in one program.”
Learn to practice therapy by practicing therapy.
You can understand therapeutic theory intellectually and still wonder what to actually do when another human is sitting across from you. Our licensure program is built around learning through experience. Academic study is integrated with practicum, personal therapy, and intensive training experiences.
Practicum
Work live in small groups under the guidance of experienced faculty. Practicum gives you a place to try the work, experience therapy yourself, observe others, and receive direct feedback as your skills develop.
Faculty Demonstrations
Watch experienced Gestalt therapists work in real time. Live demonstrations make the theory visible and give students an opportunity to explore why a therapist chose a particular intervention, question, or direction.
Supervised Clinical Experience
Clinical work is a central part of becoming a therapist. Students begin seeing clients as part of their training and receive ongoing supervision as they work toward the clinical experience required for licensure.
Intensive Training Retreats
Winter and Spring Intensives offer several days of immersive learning outside the usual classroom environment. Through demonstrations, experiential exercises, personal exploration, and time together as a community, students have an opportunity to go much more deeply into the work.
Personal Therapy
You don’t only study the therapeutic process. You experience it yourself. Personal therapy is required and gives students firsthand knowledge of Gestalt while supporting the personal development involved in becoming a therapist.

Why Gestalt Therapy?
Through attention to moment-to-moment experience, authentic dialogue, and thoughtful experimentation, we create the conditions for greater awareness. You begin to pay attention differently. To your feelings. Your body’s signals. The way you relate and respond to others. And as you become more aware of yourself, new perspectives and possibilities naturally emerge.
With greater awareness comes greater freedom: the ability to meet life’s challenges with more choice in how you respond.
A Community You Keep
Through the Gestalt Graduates Landing Pad, alumni can continue developing their clinical skills through case supervision and live practicum while staying connected to the community that shaped their training. It’s a place to bring the questions that come with building a practice, keep learning, and find support for whatever comes next.
Ready to explore the program?
Tuition is $6,000 for 3 years and $2000 for the 4th year.
In addition to tuition, students should anticipate costs associated with supervision, room and board for intensive trainings, and required personal therapy.
Monthly payment plans are available and all or part of the cost of training may be tax deductible. Consult your tax advisor.
Some partial scholarships are available through the M’Lou Caring Diversity Scholarship, created to support greater diversity within the Gestalt community.
Applications are accepted year-round, with new students entering in September or February.
Decisions are typically made within one month, and because class sizes are intentionally small, early application is encouraged.
